Debilitated Planet in Vedic Astrology: Sign Over House
Why planetary dignity shapes the chart more than placement
A debilitated planet in Vedic astrology is not a broken one. Learn the exaltation and debilitation signs, and the classical cancellation called neecha bhanga.
A debilitated planet in Vedic astrology is one of the most misread symbols in a birth chart. By the end of this piece you will understand what exaltation and debilitation actually measure, which sign each classical planet rises and falls in, and why the classical tradition refuses to treat debilitation as a verdict.
Sign, Not House
Exaltation and debilitation belong to signs, not to house positions. Each planet carries a fixed sign of peak dignity and a fixed sign of weakness, and these do not shift with the ascendant. The same planet placed in the 7th house can be exalted in one chart and debilitated in another, depending entirely on which sign occupies that house. The house tells you the area of life the planet governs. The sign tells you the fundamental quality of strength or strain with which it governs that area. Conflating the two is the root of most errors in reading planetary dignity. For a broader orientation to how signs and houses interact, the piece on the 12 houses in Vedic astrology offers a useful foundation.
The Seven Dignities
The classical texts assign one exaltation sign and one debilitation sign to each of the seven visible planets. Every pair sits directly opposite in the zodiac.
| Planet | Exaltation sign | Debilitation sign |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries | Libra |
| Moon | Taurus | Scorpio |
| Mars | Capricorn | Cancer |
| Mercury | Virgo | Pisces |
| Jupiter | Cancer | Capricorn |
| Venus | Pisces | Virgo |
| Saturn | Libra | Aries |
Rahu and Ketu are left aside here because the classical sources differ on their assignments. The seven pairings above are consistent across the Parashari tradition. When a planet occupies its exaltation sign, its natural significations tend to express with clarity and ease. When it occupies its debilitation sign, those same significations require more effort, more maturity, and often more conscious cultivation.
Neecha Bhanga: Cancellation of Debilitation
The classical tradition does not stop at naming weakness. It describes a precise set of conditions under which debilitation is cancelled, a principle known as neecha bhanga, meaning the breaking of the fall.
When debilitation is cancelled, the planet does not simply recover its ordinary strength. The classical texts hold that it can produce results more pronounced than those of a planet that was never weakened at all.
Two of the most cited conditions: first, if the planet that rules the sign of debilitation is itself placed in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th house) counted from the ascendant or the Moon; second, if the planet that would be exalted in that same sign occupies a kendra. When either condition is met, the debilitation is considered cancelled, and the planet's significations can emerge with notable force.
Why Debilitation Is Not a Verdict
Reading a debilitated planet as uniformly damaging is one of the most persistent oversimplifications in popular astrology. The classical tradition asks for a layered reading: the planet's dispositor, its aspects received and cast, its lordship over houses in the chart, and whether any cancellation condition applies. A debilitated Saturn that rules a strong house and receives a cancellation can still act constructively within its domain. The journal post on Saturn's aspects in Vedic astrology illustrates how a single planet's influence extends well beyond its sign placement. The sign shows potential and the quality of effort required. The full chart shows how that potential is expressed.
Finding This in Your Own Chart
To locate these dignities in your own chart, identify the sign each planet occupies, then compare it against the table above. Note whether any planet sits in its exaltation or debilitation sign, and if debilitated, check whether its sign ruler or the planet exalted in that sign occupies a kendra from your ascendant or Moon. Those two observations alone will sharpen your reading considerably. You can cast your free Vedic birth chart at VedaSight to see your planetary positions calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole sign houses.
