How to Read Your Vedic Birth Chart in Minutes

The square, the houses, and where to begin

Learn how to read a Vedic birth chart: where the rising sign sits, how the 12 houses are counted, and how to find your Moon. Ends with a period.

Learning how to read a Vedic birth chart is simpler than it first appears, because the diagram has one fixed anchor that organizes everything else. By the end of this walkthrough you will know where your rising sign sits, how the 12 houses are counted, and how to locate your Moon and trace its meaning through the chart.

The Ascendant: Your Fixed Starting Point

The North Indian chart is a square divided into 12 smaller boxes, and the box at the top center is always the 1st house. This is the lagna, the ascendant, the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. The classical texts call it the house of self, body, and overall life direction. Every other house is counted from this one point, moving counterclockwise around the square. The number printed inside each box identifies the sign occupying that house: 1 for Aries, 2 for Taurus, and so on through 12 for Pisces. For a deeper look at why the lagna carries such weight, see The Rising Sign in Vedic Astrology: Why the Lagna Leads.

The Four Aims of Life

The classical tradition does not treat the 12 houses as a random list. It organizes them into four aims, known in Sanskrit as the purusharthas, and every house belongs to one group.

AimHousesTheme
Dharma1, 5, 9Purpose and righteousness
Artha2, 6, 10Material resources and effort
Kama3, 7, 11Desire and relationship
Moksha4, 8, 12Inner life and liberation

The four corner boxes, houses 1, 4, 7, and 10, are called the kendras, the pillars of the chart. They fall at the cardinal points of the diagram and carry the greatest structural weight. Planets placed in these houses tend to express their nature with particular force and visibility.

A planet in a kendra acts; a planet in a trikona (houses 1, 5, 9) illuminates. When a planet occupies both roles at once, the classical texts regard it as especially well-placed.

Planets in Boxes

Planets appear inside whichever box held their sign at the moment of your birth, written as short abbreviations: Mo for the Moon, Su for the Sun, Ma for Mars, and so on. A planet in a house brings its own nature into that area of life. The Moon in the 4th house, for instance, places lunar themes of mind and feeling within the house of home and inner peace. An empty house is not a missing area of life. The lord of the sign occupying that house still governs it from wherever it sits elsewhere in the chart. Nothing in the diagram is truly vacant.

Reading Relationships Between Houses

Once you know which planet rules each sign, you can trace where that ruler has landed. That connection between two houses becomes a conversation the chart is always conducting with itself. Aspects, meaning the sight of one planet cast upon another house, extend these conversations across the whole diagram. Saturn, for example, casts its aspect not only to the house it occupies but to the 3rd, 7th, and 10th houses counted from its position. The chart is not a list of isolated placements. It is a single, interwoven system, and reading it well means following those threads rather than reading each box in isolation. Finding This in Your Own Chart

Open your chart and locate the top-center box. Note the number inside it: that number is your rising sign, your lagna. Count counterclockwise to find houses 2, 3, 4, and so on. Find the abbreviation for the Moon and note which box it occupies: that is your Moon sign. The degree printed beside it places the Moon within one of the 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions that refine its meaning considerably. Record the sign, the house, and the degree, and you have the three coordinates from which most chart reading begins.
