The Nine Periods and Their Lengths

The Vimshottari cycle spans 120 years and distributes that time among nine planets in a fixed sequence. Most people live through four to six complete periods, which is why the ruling planet of any given dasha feels so present and defining.

Venus holds the longest period at 20 years; the Sun holds the shortest at 6. The sequence always runs in this order, though a person may enter it at any point depending on the Moon nakshatra at birth.

What Each Period Activates

Every mahadasha contains a finer layer called antardashas, also known as bhuktis.
